HIV/STI risk perceptions and protective actions among adults with concurrent sexual partnerships: a study of Mexican sexual biographies

Background: It is not known if concurrent partners perceived the risk and the response to it. A new approach is followed here that examines the sexual biography and the circumstances in which sexual activity occurs. Objectives: To examine the perception of risk of individuals with concurrent partners, the normative and cultural references that prevent or promote this perception and actions and responses regard the risk perceived. Methods: 80 in-depth interviews we collected (men, women, MSM; single, in union, separated; rural/urban). Of them, 28 stated having concurrent partners. Life conditions, life cycle stage, type of partner, social norms of exclusive sexuality, perception of risk and strategies followed among other were examined. Results: Sexual risks are present in the lives of individuals with concurrent sexual partners, but do not always perceive them. Responses are of protection or greater risks, depending on the social conditions and the weight of other risks perceived.
