Poverty reduction: a veritable tool for development in sub-Saharan Africa

Omotosho k Oluwatoyin, University of Ibadan

The move to eradicate poverty and engender development has been on for some time globally. This led to formulation of policies both at local and international scenes to ensure the achievement of this objective. Without mincing words serious efforts are being made by sub-Sahara Africa more especially Nigeria to achieve this lofty goal. In spite of these efforts, studies on the levels of poverty in different dimensions show that there may be no appreciable progress in that direction. This paper assesses development policies at the national level (Nigeria) in the last ten years; how it has measured with international policies and targets, challenges to the policies from different perspective, and implications for Nigeria development. The paper suggests how the country could achieve this goal for the over all benefit of all and sundry.
