Migration decision in the Maghreb: which difference between women and men?

Ibtihel Bouchoucha, Institut national d'études démographiques (INED)

Migration’s phenomenon in the Maghreb became more and more extensive. The migrations of women increase showing a significant improvement of their status. However, women and men do not migrate under the same conditions. The main objective of this paper is to study how gender relations influences the migration decision in order to better understand the migratory patterns of men and women, in the Maghreb. By analyzing the socio-economical and educational depart conditions of the migrants - men and women- we tried to explain the influence of gender relations on the migration decision. Using MIREM data (2007) we developed descriptive and spatial comparative analysis between women and men and simple logistic regressions to explain the decision of migration in particular the main reason for migration.
