The objective of this paper is to analyze the impacts of different death causes and the diverse age profiles on the evolution of life expectancy at birth in Minas Gerais state, and in its capital Belo Horizonte, in Brazil between the years of 1996 and 2005. We used the SIM database (SIM - Sistema de Informação sobre Mortalidade: Mortality system database) in order to obtain death data for the years 1995/1996/1997 and 2004/2005/2006. We used the method developed by Pollard (1982), which estimates the impacts of different types of death causes by age on life expectancy at birth in a specific period. We expect that the process of increase in the relative importance of non-infectious disease against the infections ones continues in Brazil. We also expect that the younger and older age groups may play are more effective contribution for the increase in life expectancy at birth than others age groups in the population.
