An analysis of the occupational trajectories of youth in Brazilian metropolitan areas according to gender

The aim of this research is to investigate the occupational trajectory in metropolitan areas in Brazil by identifying sex differences in the 20 to 30 age group, among which there are important personal decisions being made. The database is the Pesquisa Mensal de Emprego - Monthly Employment Survey (PME/IBGE) in Brazil. The Grade of Membership (GoM) method was used to produce a typology. In order to produce the profiles, we used more than twenty string variables. The results show that there are five profiles that take in almost 100% of the sample. Analyzing the individuals’ characteristics in each profile, we can classify them as “excluded persons from work”, “precarious occupied workers”, “vulnerable occupied workers”, “hard workers” and “promising youth”. Women predominate in the worst profile (“excluded persons from work”) and are the same proportion as men in the best one (“promising youth”). Besides women’s transitions are mostly worse than men’s.
