In France, from 1996 to1999, Suicide mortality rates decreased, and a difference was observed between the regions which have implemented suicide prevention programmes (Programmes régionaux de sante (PRS)) and the others which have not launched PRS of this kind. The former regions showed a sharper decrease in their suicide mortality rates than the latter. In this presentation, the factors underlying these regional trends in this country will be examined by age groups and consequences for longevity will be discussed at the light of the scientific literature.
