The dynamics of poverty alleviation in Nigeria

This paper investigated poverty and its alleviation in Nigeria. Using data since 2001 after the millennium declaration to adopt the MDGs, it was found that differentials and inequality exists between males in urban areas, and among females in rural areas. Poverty in rural areas since the millennium declaration is on the decrease with the agricultural sector benefiting more as the sector also employs majority of the poor in rural areas. Urban unemployment is on the increase. The paper posits that much of the inequality and poverty in Nigeria are related to inadequate spending on the education and health sectors.
