Marriage as the most important factor for leaving parental home in Poland. Mixed patterns in the transition country

Leaving parental home is an important event of individual life course; it is a component of a wider set of events described as transition to adulthood. The fact of making a decision concerning leaving parental home is connected mainly with starting one’s own family, marriage, continuation of education, and also initiation of economic activity. In Poland as a Catholic country with strong family traditions and ties, the main reason for leaving parental home is establishing one’s own family (through marriage or partnership union). The main thesis of the presented paper is the following: the social and economic changes of the period of transformation significantly influenced attitudes and behaviours concerning the time and circumstances of leaving parental home by successive generations.
