Estimates of total fertility rate after adjustment of quantum and tempo effect on fertility

Sandip Chakraborty, International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS)

The present study applies the Bongaarts-Feeney model on quantum and tempo effect on fertility in context of India. The model is applied for three different rounds of National Family Health Survey data to estimate the total fertility rate after an adjustment due to change in mean age of childbearing. In the model it was assumed that the change is linear. The present paper also examines what would be the adjusted total fertility rate if the change in mean age of childbearing is exponential. The analysis enhance that if the change in mean age of childbearing is exponential, Bongaarts-Feeney formula for adjusting total fertility rate does not give any different picture in three different rounds of National Family Health Surveys. But if the change is linear than the adjusted Total Fertility Rate is totally different from the estimated total fertility rates.
