Socio-spatial segregation and the labor market in emerging metropolitan areas in Brazil: the case of Campinas, State of São Paulo

The aim of the present study is to contribute to the analyses of the impact that segregation has on the capacity of populations to respond to the numerous problems and risks that exist in large urban areas. This article has the purpose of investigating an emerging metropolitan area in Brazil to verify whether there are indications of the effect of segregation on different characteristics of the insertion of individuals in the labor market. The authors attempt to evaluate the impact of the location of persons in regional space in terms of "unemployment," "formality of labor situations" and the "social protection" of the economically active population. The study took into consideration socio-demographic characteristics. As a spatial variable related to segregation, a measure based on "local Moran's I" was also used. The results suggest the importance of place on the form of insertion of individuals in the labor market.
