Home is where the heart is: living arrangements of young adults in Brazil

In developing countries, the age at which the children leave the parents' household to form their own household has increased. Yet little is known about the Brazilian situation. The objective of this paper is to understand the changes occurred in the living arrangements of the male and female young adults from ages 15 to 29 in 1986, 1996 and 2006. Have the living arrangements of young adults changed in these two decades? How do arrangements in 2006 differ from those in 1986? Are there differences between male and female living arrangements? Are there regional differences within Brazil? What are the socioeconomic and demographic factors associated with co-residing with parents or forming one´s household? Data come from the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), collected by the Brazilian Census Bureau. The methodology includes descriptive statistics and logistic regression models, the dependent variable being co-residence with parents.
