Social networks and health of older people in Spain
Laura Lorenzo, University Hospital La Paz
Social networks play an important role in the wellbeing and health of the elderly. Most specifically, a beneficial effect has been observed for: social and community activities, and have frequent contact with family and friends. This study examines the association between social and family networks and health of older people in Spain. The analysis is based on the 2004 ‘Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe’ (SHARE). I will first present a description of the family support, social activities and family contacts of people over 65 in Spain. Then, I will assess the linkages between social networks and health.
